The Holland Bastion

"Built against the Dutsh attacks"

The Holland Bastion
offers a beautiful view on the bay and the Rance estuary to Cape Frehel; another fort built by Garangeau, Harbour Isle (Ile Harbour) can be seen facing Dinard. The bastion is adorned by ancient cannons from the 18th century and a statue of Jacques Cartier.

The Small Walls meet with the Holland Bastion (1674) when they reach Saint Pierre’s Gate and the former Chiens du Guet  kennel. From 1150 until 1770, the town was protected from prowlers and pillagers by a pack of 24 mastiffs, guarding the shores and the ships’ safety. These dogs were let out at the sound of Noguette, the cathedral’s bell, which still rings every night at 10.
