"St Vincent Gate is now the town's main entrance"
The double gate is externally adorned with Brittany's coat of arms, and the motto "Potius mori quam foedari" (Better death than stain) and the town's arms and motto "Semper fidelis" (Always loyal). The latter are made of a portcullis recalling the walls girding the town, on which an ermine walks, the allegorical animal of the Dukes of Brittany, a symbol of purity and loyalty.
This gate was erected during the first expansion of 1708-1710, which made the Merbonne cove disapear. At the bottom of the stairs of the ramparts, a Latin inscription can be read which recalls how the domain of the town was expanded under Louis Le Grand (Louis XIV)'s auspices providing a new gate and a new quarter, improving the inhabitants'confort and safety.
