St Thomas Gate

St Thomas Gate, the Thirs of its name"

Saint Thomas’ Gate, the Third of its name, was built during the fourth expansion of 1737-1742. It looks down to the slipway and Fan Beach (la plage de l’Eventail), and has kept the former parts of the counterweight of the gate. The stairs lead to the curtain, which offers a full view of the bay all the way to the Pointe de la Varde.
Across the bay stands Fort National (1689), that can be reached on foot in low tide, and on your right, further out to sea, you can see the Fort de la Conchée. Both forts were built following the blueprints of Vauban, who was the architect in chief of King Louis XIV.

The curtain, started in 1694 and heightened in 1758, leads to the bastion of the Queen’s Fort (Fort de la Reine). At its feet lay the rocks where the “Machine infernale”  (explosive device) exploded in 1693. This powder ship was launched by the English against the hornet’s nest that the corsair port of Saint Malo represented. Nice viewpoint on the romantic Grand Bé islet, where Chateaubriand lays.
