"Il abrita la Guillotine" (Home of the Guillotine)

The construction of the bastion Saint Louis, named in honour of King Louis 14th, began in 1714 at the time of the 2nd expansion of the city. It was finished in 1721 during its 3rd expansion. The Fort du Naye is situated just opposite it defending access to the port.

During the French Revolution the first floor of this fortification was used to house the bois de justice, the fateful guillotine.
