The flag
The town flag is blue with a central white cross. One quarter of it is brocaded with the ermine taken from the town’s coat of arms (see further, St Vincent’s Gate), and flies from the top of the castle, as a reminder of the former privileges of Saint Malo, which was an autonomous town between 1590 and 1594.
The colour red was used by the privateers as a mark of attack.
The gleaming white cross is for every harbour under the reign of Louis XIV.
The blue is the specific colour of Saint-Malo's harbour.
The ermine or stoat is the allegorical animal of The Dukes of Brittany, a symbol of purity and loyalty.
