A little bit about the geology

The coastlines of Saint Malo are typically Breton. They consist of cliffs and sandy bays that have been eroded by the sea over a long period of time. Water seeps into rocks during the daytime, then freezes at night, the ice expands, thus, creating a wedge in the rock. After thousands of years, the repetition in the forming and melting of the ice causes fissures, which eventually breaks the rock down. Due to the movement of the waves, the sea breaks down these shards of rock and fragments them into pebbles and then into grains of sand. Now much lighter, the sand is transported by the sea current and disposed on sheltered beaches.
